New Paltz is a village in the Shawangunk Mountains of New York filled with hippie charm and small town feels. Previously, I only knew of New Paltz as a college town but it has so much to offer for a day trip or even a weekend getaway.

For our first wedding anniversary, we were supposed to be on our honeymoon in Italy but you know COVID. So instead we decided to take a day trip to New Paltz for a hike and lunch but now we wish that we had booked a long weekend there instead to fully enjoy our time.
Where to Stay:
Mohonk Mountain House: The grounds of the Mohonk Mountain House look like something out of a Stephen King novel – part magnificent Victorian castle, part spooky. The house started as a 10-room inn on 300 acres and now has expanded to a luxurious compound with luscious gardens, spa, beach, and 18-hole golf course. There is lots to do here at the Mohonk house from hiking, tennis, kayaking, and horseback riding (most activities are limited to house guests vs. day guests due to COVID restrictions). If you’re looking to have a picturesque fall experience, I would definitely recommend visiting or staying at Mohonk House.
Minnewaska Lodge: For a more affordable stay in New Paltz, you could book an Airbnb or stay at the Minnewaska Lodge in Gardiner, NY (only 10 minutes from New Paltz proper). The Lodge boosts views of the “Gunks” mountains on a serene 17-acres with clean and more modern looking rooms. Minnewaska Lodge is more lowkey but it honestly provides all you need for a relaxing yet energizing weekend.
FYI – Mohonk House and Minnewaska Lodge are not pet-friendly.
Where to Eat:
Lola’s Cafe: Lola’s is located at a main intersection of town with a spacious outdoor patio as well as indoor dining room. You HAVE to order the short rib grilled cheese — it’s filled with delicious tender short rib with tomato chutney and cheddar and havarti cheese. Then because calories don’t count when you’re out of town…wash it down with a s’mores milkshake…yum.
A Tavola Trattoria: Their pappardelle bolognese and grilled octopus came highly recommended however once we were done with our hike it was too early for dinner so we had a late lunch instead. Next time, we’re in the area we definitely plan on having dinner at A Tavola Trattoria.
Where to Shop:
Local shops such as Heady Teddy’s Outfitters: Of course, I had to buy a little something to commemorate the day. I bought some delicious smelling incense sticks, a palo santo (“holy wood” to burn off some negative energy) and some new crystals.
Water Street Market: There is also a small shopping village with various stores from antique and record stores to intimates and pet boutiques, art galleries, and a local theatre. Check out https://waterstreetmarket.com/ for more info.
What to Do:
Hiking and Biking Trails:
- The Wallkill Valley Rail Trail is flat and tree lined with shade. It is the perfect trail for families or folks who don’t want a strenuous activity. There are some amazing bridges with stunning views along the way.
- The River to Ridge Trail has breathtaking views. This trail does require some uphill pedaling and it is in full sun…but it’s worth it!

Kayak (available weekends only in the fall):
New Paltz Kayaking provides kayak, canoe and rowboat rentals in Sojourner Truth Park which is on the Wallkill River. A couple of years ago, I went kayaking with Chase and our friends at this location. We definitely had a nice time on the river and then rewarded ourselves with a wine tasting.
Bonus: Wineries
The New Platz area has 15 distinct wineries/vineyards including Angry Orchard and Benmarl wineries but my absolute favorite is Robibero Winery. Robibero is a family-owned vineyard with great views of the Shawangunk Ridge. Cabernet Franc is great red wine and we stock up on it anytime we’re in the area.
