If you are a curly hair girl, you know there are all these rules for what you can and cannot do to your hair. BUT I don’t always follow the rules — for example, one of the rules is no heat on your hair but my hair is usually blow dried in the winter…it’s COLD in NY, I can’t walk around with wet hair (I’ll catch pneumonia per my mom). Now when it comes to what items touch my hair, I’m much more strict. Here are the items that I swear by to protect my hair.
Microfiber Towel: Please don’t use a regular old towel on your precious hair even if you don’t have curly hair. Microfiber towels minimize friction that causes frizz in your hair. My hair dries better with a large microfiber towel like this Aquis one vs a microfiber turban because I have enough hair for two weaves.
TIP: Avoid using fabric softener when washing your towels especially microfiber towels as it affects it’s absorbency.
Wet Brush: Once my hair is dry, I don’t touch it with any hair tools. That’s it, if I didn’t detangle when it was we then I lost my chance because I will only end up brushing out the curl pattern. So this is why I make sure to detangle my hair when it’s wet in the shower. I bought a Wet Brush on a whim because I thought no way was this little brush going to work on my head of hair. Years later, this brush comes with me on any vacations and there’s a permanent one in my shower. It’s gentle enough on wet hair and does it a great job detangling even the most tangled mess.
Diffuser: I confess that I still don’t know how to properly diffuse my hair but when I do figure it out, the world better watch out! I usually am a wash and go kinda gal but when I want to diffuse my hair this silicone diffuser by The Curly Co. is the one that I use. It’s flexible enough to fit most hair dryers (even hotel ones) and it’s collapsible so it’s a great addition to your gym or travel bag.

Silk Pillowcase: You don’t need to break the bank and buy all silk linens to protect your hair but you can get a silk pillowcase just for you. When I change my sheets and pillowcases, I typically allocate one silk pillowcase for the pillow that I use the most. It’s great fabric to prevent friction on your hair and on your face.
Satin-lined Cap: Okay, here’s my last secret: most curly hair girls have a standard bonnet that make you look like the grandma from Red Riding Hood but mine needed an upgrade so I went with the satin-lined cap from Grace Eleyae. I use my “Slap” as an overnight bonnet and also as a regular hat during the cold winter months. Grace Eleyae has a beautiful collection of caps, turbans, headbands and scrunchies from muted colors to vibrant prints. Check their site here!
